Search does count existing pages in all cases for performance reasons. It is not meant to give exact number of pages, for this you can use [[PageCount()]] to get total number of pages, and [[PageCount(exists)]] to get only the existing pages (non deleted).

Search say:

• xx results of about xxx pages. (0.30 seconds)

If it does not say "about" in your language, then its a translation bug - ask the language maintainer to correct the translation.

The text in the source was not changed because this will break the translation for all languages, and we do not have the translators available for small bugfix releases.

• How should he know that he has to change it? That is ridiculous.
  • He does not know, but the translation is not broken, only less exact. You are invited to suggest a better solution that does not break all the translations.
    • Edit the source then either replace the fuzzy tag after po-creation (if it is respected while conversion) or do nothing at all (if it is not respected, I haven't looked at the code).
      • Too much fuss for nothing. Better have a wiki page for translation changes for each bug fix release. Some translators will subscribe to this page and do the needed changes for every bug fix release, some will not. In the worst case, the translation will not be updated.
        • Fuss? That works automatically.
