Do not show full IP address of editor
It should be possible to configure moinmoin so that it does not store any ip-addresses and/or DNS names of people editing a wiki, or does store just parts of it. Especially in regions with strong data protection laws (like the german speaking and nordic countries) and in countries where people are less tolerant to free speech it might be valuable.
A minimum requirement would be not to display the ip adress of logged in users, like mediawiki does it.
If somebody thinks it is necessary for spam protection: there are by far better means than show an ip address to the public or to the admin.
Obfuscating IPs does not only encourage spammers, but also flamers, nazis, and other people that have fair good reasons not to be recognized in the public. Even if there was an option for opac edits, no sensible wiki owner would ever activate it, because as the publisher he takes the full responsibility for all contents. Therefore, logging the IPs is not only reasonable, it is necessary. And speaking of data protection: better to do the logging visibly, so that anybody can see that his IP will be logged and shown. If you display the IP only to certain users, anonymous editors could have the impression that their IP won't be logged or shown in any case. So, my -2 for this. -- MartinBayer 2006-04-24 18:16:15
Please document what you expect that isn't done by show_hosts = 0.
