MoinMoin

This is my first experience with Wikis, and I have to admit, it's unexpectedly weird. These are essentially notes to myself. I knew they were visible, but I definitely didn't expect to get such an attentive response. In other words, I apologize for appearing to be so negative about MoinMoin. Actually, my initial reaction to Wikis, and MoinMoin in particular, is very positive. It seems that I just need to be more careful about what I publish, at least until I'm more familiar with the environment. -- GlennFreidet 2006-10-31 11:23:13

On that note, I'd like to ask a few basic questions. Hopefully, the answers will raise my understanding to the point that I won't waste anyone's time again.

  1. On this site, I have no ACL control, correct? In other words, I have no way to tag certain text as being immutable or completely private. Is that correct?
  2. If that's true, how can I organize my site so people know where there comments are welcome and where they are not?
  3. Given the situation below, that which started as a list of notes has now become a free-form conversation thread. What is the convention for continuing the thread? Do I respond here, in my own Wiki, with indented bullets? Do I somehow move the conversation to a public/common venue? And, at the risk of be redundant, how do I keep my notes separate from my conversations?
    • The best way is to add you questions and answers to the FAQ if you find that they are important to others. And you can edit the documentation on MoinMaster if you think some points could be made more clear. In fact the ThreadMode is NOT really the wiki way. Or to say it better: refactoring content is more wiki like. Having to read a whole thread is costing more time. Its always good to refactor a page. And to write in 3rd person perspective. -- ThiloPfennig 2006-11-01 11:23:36

  4. In a conversation thread such as this, when and where is it appropriate to add my signature? I noticed you only did it once, after you first comment.
  5. What is the purpose/limitations of my Wiki on this site? I'm trying to put together a web-based forum to consolidate all of my notes, files, projects, links, etc. I can and will create my own MoinMoin host, but it won't be accessible to the net. I'd prefer to go public. Is this not the place to do it?

    • What you are looking for is a wiki hoster.
  6. Actually, the question above is more expansive than it might appear. I'm being drowned by information overload. I already have an enormous amount of information that can't be organized to my satisfaction, and every day, it grows exponentially. I use an annoyingly cumbersome combination of Outlook, EverNote, OneNote, HTML/TXT/other files, Windows Favorites, Firefox Bookmarks, Scrapbook, Opera Bookmarks, several synchronization widgets, and so on. It's a long list and the list of applications I've tried and rejected is much, much longer. To the point: in your opinion, will I be able to use Wikis to consolidate some, if not all, of my knowledge-base, or am I wasting my time?

Note To Self: Don't leave notes to self.

Annoyances

  1. So, is it me or does the HomepageTemplate just not work? Specifically, when you follow the Create my home page now! link, the editor throws an error if you hit Save or Preview.

    • works for me (as you can see in history of my homepage) -- ThomasWaldmann 2006-10-30 11:49:11

      • I'm sure there's some simple reason it didn't work for me. I was just venting.
  2. Apparently, GUI mode doesn't work in FF.
    • this is a current problem of the configuration of this site - in a normal setup it'll work
      • Trying that now, thanks.
    • GUI mode works in IE (on this site). However, the Format button can crash IE:
      • Select text.
      • Click Format to display menu.
      • Click outside of the menu (attempt to deselect it).
  3. The spell checker uses a 2204 word dictionary? Ironically, the dictionary doesn't contain the words "dictionary", "spell" and "checker". Fortunately, Google Toolbar does.
    • I'll look at that.
      • I assumed there was a larger English-only dictionary. Don't waste your time. Thanks.
  4. Slow site. Must be that whole, "The server is on another continent.", thing.
    • no, it is because this server runs under high load (often >10), we work on that, too.

      • Again, just babbling to myself. Please ignore.
  5. The lockout thing is annoying. How do you know when it's OK to speed up again. Every attempt makes it worse.
    • you just have to slow down a bit - and don't ignore it when it warns you
      • Well, this one really did irritate me a little. The problem is that I slowed down when I received the warning, but if I don't slow down enough, I got penalized again. Once that happened the lock-out duration seemed to accelerate rapidly. It's a snow-ball effect, if you're familiar with the phrase. I assumed that once I was more familiar with the MoinMoin interface, I wouldn't run into it any more.

  6. The "Add Pages to Displayed Wiki-Names" preference doesn't seem to work.
    • what do you mean?
    • Yes, what do you mean by that? Adding some quicklinks?? You can see the quicklink in moderne theme only, when you navigate away form the page. I have already complaint about that on UsabilityObservation/ConfusingPseudoTabControlBehaviour. The developers seem not to care... They find Moin simple to use and self-explaining what it is definitely not! "Works for me..". I would never got on the idea to click on the page name in the tab control so as to return to the normal view of the page after calling e.g. action=diff... You??

    • Two things: first, how do I know who the second speaker is here? There's no signature. Second, I could explain what I meant, but now that I know someone's listening, let me confirm it first. I'll get back to you. Thanks!
