I just cancelled my .NET hostings and was looking for something more useable than MS SharePoint Team Services. I'm in terrible need of some thing, that just keeps my files and thoughts and might as well implement a communications channel.
We do use MediaWiki at work (sort of ancient flavour of), so I was really startled by MoinMoin. Both its appearance and its features appear to hardly leave anything to be wished for - except faster full text searches.
I now have a Wiki of my own (quite void yet): http://wiki.saddey.net and of course a blog too: http://blog.saddey.net

Welcome Reiner! Just a hint: maybe you just want to set page_front_page in your wiki (see HelpOnLanguages). -- ThomasWaldmann 2006-03-20 16:47:27
Your wiki uses different "front pages" depending on the browser language you have configured. This is maybe not what you want. Regarding "openness": yes wikis are open by default, because this is the wiki way. But you can use ACLs to close it (if you need to) and and modern_cms theme to make it easier for non-editors.
The GUI editor is active on moinmoin.wikiwikiweb.de. It is switched off on moinmaster wiki, because the text editor is better for i18n, system and help pages.
SQL DB support is not easily possible before we have some kind of storage backend. This backend is planned for 2.0. SQL DB backend code is likely to have to be done by someone needing it (we don't).
Reponses from me
Hi Tom (am I entitled to call you Tom?),
Thanks! Please be more precise (re: HelpOnLanguages), if possible:-) I'll gladly obey any advice that might help to get things going
I should be working all day for my employer. Ahem, so, well, it's just "to make both ends meet". Both MoinMoin and (honourable mention) http://wordpress.org appear to be next to "sliced bread", but at the moment, both Wikis and Blogs appear have some shortcomings when it comes to fitting my bill. Wikis tend to be too open (to such an extend, that an "average" German just doesn't know which button to press). In my opinion, blogs tend to be too closed (you may comment on my proceedings, but God beware, don't start a theme of your own) and Wikis may be considered too open - at least within an environment which is (or should be?) primarily focused on the works of a single person (me) and his relations to other friends and co-workers.
BTW: I DO love MoinMoin! Why ist it, that you chose disable one of its slickest assets in your own MoinMoin Wiki - the GUI editor?
And another one: I took the burden of installing both MoinMoin and WordPress on my own equipment. Just a short glimpse: WordPress does not require any write access to the file system (ignoring attachments at the moment). I do like this feature, especially as I would not like my server to be taken-over (without prior notice). All texts are being stored within a database (a "real" one - innodb in my case), full text searches are blindingly fast - and might eventually stay that way, even when the sheer amount of data might exceed the run-of-the-mill 100 pages or so. If needed, I would not have any objections upgrading to an Oracle database... What about a MoinMoin xDB version? (just kidding). How does http://www.wikipedia.com handle this?
In the meantime, I'll try to set up MoinMoin as an ISAPI extension. I gather that some folks really hate Microsoft. I sure did that too some time ago, but now I just try to take advantage of some of Window's brightest features, such as its NTFS (inherited from the now-deceased IBM/MS OS/2 HPFS) and its humble attempt to supply a GUI for all and everything ("open Internet Services, navigate to wikiconfig.py, rigth-click your mouse, choose properties, deselect read access"). -- ReinerSaddey 2006-03-21 00:50:29
